The history of The Old Bakehouse in Castle Cary, Somerset

1921: The original bakery, owned by the Vaux family

Nestling in the heart of Somerset’s pretty market town of Castle Cary lies one of the region’s first and most successful Thai restaurants. Built of local Cary limestone, the historic High Street building hosts a vibrant coffee shop and restaurant by day, serving an eclectic mix of Thai and traditional British dishes at lunchtime, and on Friday and Saturday evenings an extensive menu focussed exclusively on authentic Thai cuisine.

Husband and wife team Chris and Aunchna Walker established The Bakehouse in 1997. With its blend of traditional and local food, The Bakehouse offers a magnificent dining experience – whether you are enjoying an evening out or a working lunch!

Thai food embraces an enormous variety of spices, textures, colours and tastes and is one of the world’s healthiest cuisines. Using an ancient blend of both fresh and dried spices and herbs, Thai food offers a truly delicious way of eating healthily with a good balance of nutritious vegetables and other ingredients to satisfy all tastes.

Whether you choose one of our tasty noodles, traditional stir fries or just want to take time out for a cup of coffee and a slice of homemade cake, you can be assured of a freshly prepared meal using only the highest quality ingredients. Our menu changes seasonally and there is always a great choice of special dishes.

As well as the spacious restaurant area, you can also eat outdoors under the shade of the grapevines in the courtyard during the warmer months, when the weather permits.
